(n. 12 mar. 1932, Nueva Orleans, La., EE.UU.).

Político estadounidense. Se tituló de teólogo en 1955 y ejerció como pastor en varias iglesias afroamericanas del Sur. Participó activamente en el movimiento pro derechos civiles, trabajó con Martin Luther King, Jr. y Ralph Abernathy en la Conferencia de líderes cristianos del Sur (1961–70). Se desempeñó en la Cámara de Representantes (1972–77). Partidario de Jimmy Carter desde un comienzo, fue nombrado embajador de EE.UU. ante la ONU (1977–79), primer afroamericano en ocupar dicho cargo. Más adelante fue alcalde de Atlanta (1982–90).
